L298N 2A Based Motor Driver Module

A DC motor running on higher voltage and current ratings cannot be directly controlled by a microcontroller that typically runs on 5V or 3.3V. Because of this, products like the L293D and Motor Driver Module L298N Driver Modules are frequently used as Motor Driver Modules. The L298N motor driver module is a high current motor driver with some additional functionality that is frequently used with Arduino and Raspberry Pi for robotics applications, whereas the L293D motor driver module can be used for basic low current applications.

Based on the L298 Dual Full-Bridge Driver IC, the L298N Motor Driver module can concurrently control the speed and direction of two DC motors (Motor A and Motor B). These motors have a voltage rating of 5V to 35V, and their maximum peak current is 2A.

Screw terminals are used to connect the motors that need to be controlled (Motor A and B). The voltage range should be between 7V and 35V. The voltage required to power the motor is supplied to the Motor Power and Ground screw terminal. We have an integrated 5V linear regulator because the L298 IC needs that voltage to function.

The built-in regulator will power the driver IC if the operating voltage of the motor is less than or equal to 12V. This regulated 5V can also be accessed as an output voltage from the 5V screw terminal and used to power your microcontrollers, such as Arduino.

The built-in regulator won’t be able to manage a motor with an operating voltage higher than 12V, so we must disconnect the regulator by removing the 5V Select Jumper pin and supply a different 5V power as an input voltage to the 5V screw terminal in order to power our L298N Driver IC.

Comprehensive Motor Control: Speed and Direction Manipulation

The motor’s speed is controlled via the Enable A and Enable B pins. Jumper pins will be connected by default to both Enable A and B to make them high (5V), causing the motors to spin as quickly as possible. By removing the jumper and applying a variable voltage between 0V and 5V using a PWM signal, you can change the motors’ speed.

At last, the motion of the motor is regulated by the four input pins Input 1, 2, 3, and 4. As an illustration, if Inputs 1 and 2 are set to High and Low, respectively, Motor A will rotate in a clockwise direction. The motor will revolve against the direction of rotation if they are made Low and High. The similar reasoning was used with Motor B for Inputs 3 and 4.
